INDUSTRY NEWS In this short blog Leigh Bryan, national consultant specialist at heat transfer specialist Fulton, looks at the costs associated with shell and tube steam boiler pressure vessel repair (and asks whether you really should be questioning its cost or the value of your peace of mind).

What’s the Real Cost of Pressure Vessel Repair? Whether you’re looking at a multiple tube repair or furnace section replacement (the infamous D Patch Repair), the costs associated with pressure vessel repair can quickly and easily begin to spiral. The actual cost of a repair can run into tens of thousands, with certified materials, coded welders, insurer-appointed NDT inspectors and, in the case of D patch repairs to conventional 3-pass boilers, refractory replacement. The time taken to carry out repairs may also mean a hire boiler is needed to maintain delivery of steam to the site and/or process. Another cost that can run into thousands of pounds. Let’s also not forget about the potential financial, environmental and health & safety impacts of an acid clean. Here, specialist teams using often-expensive solvent- or alkalinebased treatments are required, which means the solutions used must then be stored or neutralised and disposed of in a safe manner that can also be potentially expensive.

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE 5

INDUSTRY NEWS

Additionally, there’s the financial impact from the boiler/process downtime, which can lead to the loss of services or product. In fact, in many cases the cost of repair is insignificant compared to the cost of several days without steam while a repair is carried out or a replacement hire boiler is delivered, installed and commissioned. So, if you’re specifying steam raising plant for a new project or even replacing ageing steam boilers, don’t just consider the initial capital costs but look at the bigger picture, such as the design of a steam boiler and the potential risks from boiler/ process downtime. Unlike conventional vertical and horizontal shell and tube steam boilers – containing long steel tubes through which hot gasses from a furnace pass and around which the water to be converted to steam circulates – the design of Fulton’s radical VSRT utilises a floating, self-compensating heat exchanger design that eliminates the risk of thermal shock. Factor in no tubes (so a minimum 9.6mm material thickness) and NO refractory and the probability of a costly repair is greatly reduced. The VSRT is also backed by an industry-defining, 10-year pressure vessel warranty. So, perhaps the question you should really ask isn’t what the cost of steam pressure vessel repair is, but what is the value of your peace of mind?

Fireco celebrates one millionth sale of innovative product Innovative business Fireco is celebrating selling its one millionth Dorgard – a product which holds doors open and then automatically closes when it hears a fire alarm – following 25 years of success and a recent quick reaction to market needs during the pandemic. The door retainer was designed to replace door wedges, which keep doors open but fail to protect the premises or people inside in case of fire. Now the invention has found even greater popularity as businesses look to find safe ways to keep doors open so that staff no longer need to touch doorknobs or handles, spreading germs in the process. Fireco founder Neil Purssey originally dreamt up Dorgard 25 years ago after watching a ‘dancing daisy’ which would dance when there was a sound near it. This got him thinking - what other items would be useful if they were sound activated? Since then Fireco has designed and released another eight products in its range, with more to come, and what was once a small business born in Brighton has expanded to sell its products worldwide. Chief Executive Officer Michelle Bussey said: “The last 6 months have been challenging for businesses across the country, so we feel extremely grateful that we have something so positive to celebrate. We are proud to say we have supplied our Millionth Dorgard unit.

Dorgard

“Over the last 25 years, Fireco has worked tirelessly on the development and manufacture of innovative products that help keep premises fire safe and help save lives. When COVID-19 hit our business we reacted quickly and recognized the huge importance of Dorgard not only as a fire safety product but as a product that can assist with a premises germ control strategy. “Since then we have shifted our focus on how we can help and have been pleased to have donated products and services to those in most need. Our team has relished the challenge and we have been privileged in supporting the NHS and other organisations in their fight against COVID-19. “Manufacturing in our new premises in Sussex, we are proud to continue investing in engineering and manufacturing in the UK and the local area, together with being an active exporter into Europe and the rest of the world.” Now the company has taken its offering a step further by, in the space of just three months, designing and launching Germgard, a smart sanitising system. Germgard uses digital signage to alert users to sanitise their hands before gaining entry. This system can be used stand-alone or can be integrated with access control, automatic doors and electronic door locks, making the use of hand sanitiser a requirement before access is allowed.

FLIR Introduces Elara FR-345-EST for Rapid and Accurate Elevated Skin Temperature Screening Features an Automatic On-Edge Guide to the Inner-Canthus for Improved Temperature Reading Accuracy and People Flow Through Screening Checkpoints

As employees continue returning to the office, travelers start flying again, and fans slowly return to stadiums, technology that focuses on maintaining health and safety in semi-public and private venues remains crucial to slowing the spread of COVID-19. In response, FLIR Systems today announced the FLIR Elara™ FR-345-EST, a fixed-mount radiometric thermal security camera that measures elevated skin temperature (EST) accurately without contact or the need for a reference temperature source. This system provides a safe and effective environment at high-traffic airports, stadiums, commercial buildings, and manufacturing facilities to quickly asses skin temperature at access control points. The Elara FR-345-EST automatically guides to the part of the body that most closely correlates to core body temperature: the inner-canthus—or the inner eye of a human face—without sacrificing accuracy or the ability to maintain social distancing guidelines. The Elara FR-345-EST camera can serve as a stand-alone system without the need for desktop software or as part of a broader access control program designed to improve people flow for elevated skin temperature screening while simultaneously improving the accuracy of finding the inner-canthus, balancing the needs of personal safety and convenience. It also integrates with a variety of thirdparty video management systems (VMS), including FLIR United VMS, to enable fast integration within the existing security infrastructure to avoid adding risk to network IT security.

a smart monitor with a web browser to view a live user interface. While the camera removes the need for a dedicated operator specific to EST frontline screening**, integrators, customers and their staff can still expect a seamless user experience.

The improved AI capabilities with the on-camera software also improves the screening assessment time to an average of one-second-per-individual (after the subject is in a stationary position in front of the camera and once eyewear has been removed), helping to keep lines of workers, spectators, guests, students, and patients moving and to eliminate any potential crowding at checkpoints*. The self-screening operation provides instant go/no-go feedback and the adaptive alarm threshold feature can be used to minimize false alarms to account for natural body temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

The camera can also be customized to meet specific integrator or customer needs. In addition, FLIR offers extended training and support for customers and users to properly setup, operate and maintain the system.

The Elara FR-345-EST reduces setup time and calibration while improving real-time operator decisionmaking with on-edge analytics. Now the user has the ability to simply self-start by connecting the camera to

**FLIR EST screening solutions should be considered as one component of a broader health and safety screening program. FLIR EST cameras are not medical devices and a second screening by a medical profession is always recommended.

The Elara FR-345-EST is available globally starting today through authorized dealers, with shipments expected to begin in Q4. IS YOUR FLAT ROOF ESTATE...

AN ASSET OR A LIABILITY? The Government’s response to the Naylor Review acknowledged the importance of the collection of data to support strategic estate planning and stated:

reducing backlog maintenance not only provides a safer and higher quality estate but reduces running costs in the longer term.

A roof is a significant ‘out-of-sight’ asset and when its condition is unknown, often issues can develop over time. Easily accessible data is a crucial element in managing any estate. Without reliable data, any long-term strategic approach is unattainable and the management of the estate budget is rendered a purely reactive one.

BOOK YOUR FREE ROOF CONDITION SURVEY TODAY

Langley provides a long-term approach by creating a full asset management plan for your flat roof estate by carrying out a comprehensive roof condition survey. The data gathered then supports preventative planning and cost-effective budget management, this is achieved by minimising the risk of sudden unexpected remedial expenditure.

If work is required immediately, we are a trusted single-source of responsibility and handle every aspect of your project, from initial consultations and design, right through to final installation, after sales care and maintenance - for peace of mind. We provide systems that are durable, guaranteed, safe and fully compliant with Building Regulations.

HOW TO ENSURE A ROBUST AND SAFE FLAT ROOF SYSTEM SPECIFICATION The White Paper, supported by Zurich, covers: Regulations, Broof(t4) classification, fire performance materials, the risk of non-compliance and specifying the correct system.

October 2020

A GUIDE TO FIRE SAFE ROOF SPECIFICATIONS Here, Daren Fraser, Head of Technical at Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd, explains the fire classification that is required to comply with current Building Regulations and offers advice on how to ensure a safe and durable flat roof specification, which can be trusted to resist the spread of fire. Since the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, the Government has published its draft ‘Building Safety Bill’ (July:2020) incorporating elements from Dame Judith Hackitt’s review. The changes to requirements have been vast, with a predominant focus on building safety standards. These changes have been described by Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, as the “biggest improvements to building safety in nearly 40 years.” Occupant safety is of vital importance, and the bill will look to entitle powers to the Building Safety Regulator, that will highlight failures in breaching compliance to Building Regulations.

resistance of building materials based on this distance. Compliant classification The external fire performance of a roofing material can be identified by European classification test standards BS EN13501-5, which classify roof systems into five categories based on their performance. Broof, Croof, Droof, Eroof and Froof, with B the highest fire resistant rating. Further to this, testing is carried out to meet individual legislative requirements for each country - t1 for Germany, t2 for Scandinavia, t3 for France and t4 specific to the UK.

Understanding Approved Document B Approved Document B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations is a vital reference document and should be used for guidance in mitigating fire risks in all areas of the building in line with Building Regulations. Section B4 ‘External Fire Spread’ focuses specifically on ‘resisting fire spread from one building to another’ and details the associated hazards. For roofs, one risk is that airborne material or heat from a nearby fire may cause the roof to ignite. To improve safety, Approved Document B (Edition 2019) states the minimum distances between buildings and the required fire

The specified test for the UK has two stages designed to meet the stricter requirements demanded by UK regulations. If the system passes the required criteria, it receives Broof(t4) classification. A Broof(t4) classified system is referred to as ‘unrestricted’ or ‘low vulnerability’ and therefore has no minimum distance requirement between adjacent buildings. Whereas specific guidance in relation to different building types might provide an opportunity to specify a roofing system with a lower fire rating than Broof(t4), this is not recommended. The distances stated in the regulations are designed to protect the roof and building from the risk of fire spreading from other structures but do not account for any other ignition sources that may be closer to the building. Anything less than a system that meets the Broof(t4) classification means that the building or buildings are more susceptible to fire risks. System Approach Another factor to consider is that fire resistance classifications apply to the whole roof system, rather than

individual components. This means that, if the system has only been tested and passed with a specific type and thickness of insulation, for example, it is dangerous to assume that that system will still perform as expected if the insulation type or thickness differs from that tested - this applies to any of the components that make up the system. A particular risk is that the substituted components are more combustible than the ones tested and therefore pose a significant fire risk if installed. Independent Certification Once a system has been specified for a new or refurbishment project, Facilities Managers can review the considered solution, on whether it is safe and compliant, through documentation supplied by the manufacturer/supplier. This should include details of independent certification, such as BBA certification, or a fire test certificate via the fire testing organisation. These will detail whether the system has Broof(t4) classification and whether the components specified match those detailed within the independent certification. If not, it may mean the system is not compliant to current Building Regulations. Fire safety is a crucial consideration when selecting a flat roof system. Specifications incorporating components that have been fully tested as part of a system will ensure peace of mind that the flat roof solution is safe and compliant. Langley is a 100% Hackitt Supporter. Further information on Approved Document B and safe and durable flat roof specifications, attend their CPD webinar titled ‘Mitigating Fire in Flat Roofing’. It is delivered live and can be booked via www.langley.co.uk/cpdpresentations

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE 21

The future of health and safety training for the construction industry We’ve sat down for a Q&A with SAMS Limited Operations and training Director Lee Sadd to see how his health and safety training company have dealt with educating people and companies on a variety of courses. Q: Hi Lee, Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Our first question is how are things going for SAMS since we’ve come out of lockdown and people have gone back to work.

A: It was a very difficult period from March to May when we were at the height of lockdown. I had to make the decision to furlough all of my employees like many other businesses. Since then we have adapted our training outlay and opposed to clients coming into our offices we’ve taken quick and decisive action to go online for 7 of our most prominent courses which in include CITB, IOSH and NEBOSH training. Luckily after May and the introduction of online training we have had a positive upturn in business.

Q: What lead you to moving the course online as we know previously CITB was only a faceto-face option?

A: The great news for us was that CITB made the decision to move their courses online, which was crucial to SAMS. I think this was a major step in the right direction

and massively helped us to sustain custom over lockdown. With our clients a majority of them are in the construction industry and continued to work even when other sectors were on hold. So the training requirement was still there and we actually saw an increase after May as sadly many people who’s jobs had been lost due to the pandemic moved into our industry, as it was still vibrant. Another successful course, which we are proud to offer, is our mental health first aid training. With the current situation it has left a lot of people needing assistance so we were so pleased to help guide companies and people through this.

Q: How do your clients find the online training?

A: They love it! It’s great for them as they can learn from us in the comfort of their own homes. I’ve noticed that people are more willing to speak up through the course online as opposed to in person. It also really helps the UK as no travel is required. What’s been great for us is we can now train people all over Great Britain. We’ve had clients from as far as Scotland attend our courses. I do miss the faceto-face interaction

but over the last few months we have successfully made a safe and covid secure workspace, which will mean from October 1st we can welcome people back to our HQ in Manston.

Q: Do you think Zoom training for this sector is here to stay?

A: In short, I don’t know. I think the CITB have been fantastic in how they have allowed the training to be completed remotely so that students can earn the qualifications required to carry out their role. The feedback we have from people has been brilliant and that cannot be ignored. However at the same time if awarding bodies decide faceto-face is the best way to be educated they will revert. In my personal opinion I think it will stay as the last 6 months have show that it works. From a business perspective we find the online course very fruitful as we have a much larger reach of people that we can train. We’re looking forward to January 2021 as we resume our classroom NEBOSH training that is a great course for aspiring safety professionals. Over 5,000 people die in the UK each year due to asbestos related diseases. It is a legal requirement that all who may come across asbestos in their day to day work have been provided with the relevant asbestos training. Asbestos can be found in many products used in building materials and may also be present in soils and surrounding grounds.

Have you received asbestos training? UK Asbestos Training Association “UKATA” sets standards in asbestos training and ensures that its members meet those standards.
