The growth of working from home (WFH) following the COVID-19 pandemic poses potential security concerns around unwanted access to confidential company data. Nationwide Platforms, the UK’s leading provider of powered access machines for hire, recently delivered a bespoke three-day training course to Mechanical Specialist Inspectors at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety, which seeks to prevent work-related death, injury and ill health.

This is the second time the HSE has requested training from Nationwide Platforms, after they successfully delivered a two-day version of the course in 2019.  The course took place at Nationwide Platform’s Didcot branch, covering the journey of a MEWP from pre-delivery to collection. Technical Instructors from multiple departments got involved to share their expertise with HSE, including IAPA award winning Senior Lead IPAF Instructor Phil Drayton.

Nationwide Platform’s Head of HSE, Alana Paterson, also delivered the latest IPAF Global Safety report and reviewed trends of reported incidents when working at height.

Kate Bell, Head of UK Training for Nationwide Platforms was responsible for overseeing the course creation and delivery. She said, “The objective of this course was to enhance the knowledge of these experienced inspectors on safety innovations, highlighting risks and the prevention of common incidents that may occur. This is the second course that we have delivered to the HSE teams, we are delighted by the positive feedback and look forward to working with HSE in the future”.

Hilti Group, an innovator of tools, technology, software and services for the construction industry, has launched a new innovation providing the construction industry with a fully-connected tool park experience: Nuron, a more-powerful 22V cordless battery platform.

Key Areas

From a practical perspective, tools have been redesigned to weigh less, with ergonomically enhanced grips and improved robustness through shock resistant bumpers. Hilti’s Dust Removal System (DRS) and Active Torque Control (ATC) are available on the Nuron platform with relevant tools. Active Vibration Reduction (AVR), another key health protection and comfort feature, has been expanded to many more tools within the Nuron portfolio.

The temperature of the office is an ongoing debate in businesses globally. Employers often search for the optimal temperature to ensure employees are comfortable and productive, but did you know there’s also an optimal air temperature for industrial facilities? Here Dave Dyer, technical sales engineer at thermal fluid specialist Global Heat Transfer, explores the importance of air temperature when operating heat transfer systems and how to regulate it effectively.

Temperature control is essential for any manufacturing environment — changing temperatures can have a significant impact on processes, products and people. Some applications, such as food, chemicals, plastics or pharmaceuticals manufacturing, require heating for production. Manufacturers in these industries must consider not only how the temperature of circulating fluid will impact product quality, but how it will impact the entire facility.

Health and safety teams should monitor air temperature to ensure it does not negatively impact employee productivity or safety. Working in higher temperatures for longer periods of time can lead to fatigue, increasing the risk of illness while reducing personal productivity. Working around hot, uncovered equipment, also increases the likelihood of injuries such as burns. In order to remain compliant with health and safety legislation, companies must find ways to reduce the health and safety risks of working in facilities with heat transfer fluids.

Hot equipment

While employee safety is paramount, engineering managers should also monitor air temperature to ensure that equipment remains operational — as equipment overheats energy consumption increases and equipment efficiency decreases. Just like your office computer malfunctions when it overheats, electronic controls can fail when temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

While a thermal fluid system is built for indirect heat transfer, exceeding the intended operating temperature can negatively impact productivity. One area that can be particularly affected is the expansion tank, a critical component that allows hot thermal fluid with the space it needs to expand, which when heated can be up to 20 per cent of system volume. To allow for this as well as provide a sufficient safety factor, the expansion tank should always be approximately a third full when the system is cold. When the system is at full working temperature, the level in the expansion tank where oil hits the atmosphere should not exceed 60 degrees Celsius. If the tank exceeds 60 degrees, the oil inside will oxidise, leading to a build-up of acid and carbon (as seen in figure 1). Over time this will reduce the heat transfer efficiency of the equipment and could lead to costly downtime.

Keep it covered

Investing in correct, and properly installed insulation is the best way to regulate air temperature in the facility, control the temperature of equipment and better protect employees. Insulation ensures that heat created in the manufacturing process does not heat up the facility elsewhere, enabling manufacturers to ensure the air temperature is consistent. Insulating parts of the system also means that manufacturers can better regulate the temperature of equipment that must operate at specific temperatures, such as the expansion tank.

When choosing insulation for a heat transfer system, manufacturers should consider what material best suits the application. During its lifespan, a heat transfer fluid will degrade. The degradation process introduces by-products into the fluid, such as carbon that forms inside (as seen in figure 2) and acid corrodes unseen parts of a thermal fluid system. If this continues without intervention, small holes can appear in the coil (as seen in figure 3), allowing fluid to leak, posing a fire hazard. Thermal oil would soak into porous insulation, increasing the risk of fire and other hazards, so using a non-porous insulation, such as blown glass, works best in areas of the system where fluid could leak, including flanges.

Further benefits

While insulation is key to improving conditions for employees and equipment, there are added benefits. Insulation prevents heat from escaping, improving heat transfer efficiency. Global footwear specialist, HAIX presents the world’s fastest firefighter boot at INTERSCHUTZ, Hannover, this week. The new FIRE EAGLE 2.0 features an updated design and a new, innovative quick-fit fastener system. The RapidFit system is the quickest way to pull a boot on and fits to the individual foot in just one movement, critical when a call comes in and every second counts. 

At this year’s INTERSCHUTZ, the leading trade fair for fire and rescue services, civil protection, safety, and security, HAIX will present the brand-new FIRE EAGLE 2.0 along with its well-established product range at its 1,000m² stand spread across two levels – the largest trade fair stand in the company’s history.  

Ready for action in a flash thanks to RapidFit 

RapidFit, the quickest fastening system for firefighter boots, is a world first. Once the boot has been fitted to the foot, it can be tightened in a flash with just one hand. No additional tying or tucking is needed, as the RapidFit system automatically holds the lacing in place after tightening. A wider, ergonomic grip makes the fastener even easier to close.  

Other innovations include an RFID pocket to provide space for an RFID chip for digital personal protective equipment (PPE) management, as well as a new composite toe cap that offers even better abrasion protection in the toe area. The new instep protector has a smooth surface with no openings, making the boot easier to clean while protecting the laces from damage. 

All-round protection in action

Like its predecessor, the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 stands out for its lightweight design of around 1,000 grams per shoe, ensuring comfort without compromising on durability. The shoe is made from robust bullhide leather, which has been finished with the well-known HX logo as part of the new design.  

The FIRE EAGLE 2.0 provides all-round protection with a toe cap made of fibre-reinforced plastic, penetration protection and a non-slip, heat-resistant sole. The GORE-CROSSTECH laminate not only makes the shoe waterproof but also offers penetration protection against blood and other bodily fluids as well as any resultant viruses and bacteria. Reflective inserts in a signal colour ensure good visibility, even in thick smoke.  

For maximum comfort, a cushioning insole and the Arch Support System ensure optimal foot support and a secure hold. The HAIX Climate System uses the foot’s pumping motion when walking to wick moisture out of the shoe, ensuring feet stay at an optimum temperature.
