Q&A with SIP Build UK

Can you give a short background to SIP Build UK and its successful growth into what is now a wider Group offering sustainable building expertise?

SBUK emerged in 2012 in the knowledge that the UK building industry was going to face an overhaul in regulations that would demand the use of building systems with improved thermal efficiencies.

These improved and more stringent regulations combined with a further requirement to future proof new dwellings has allowed the group to develop distinct offerings using energy efficient, sustainable timber systems be it with SIPs or Pre Insulated Timber Frames.

The group now has a number of high performance solutions to offer that we can tailor to each projects thermal, aesthetic and commercial requirements.

All of the stocked timber was used and supply became very tight, prices went through the roof and product became scarce. As an industry we seem to have been at the front of the recessionary pressures before they worked through to the consumer markets.

Ukraine has had impact on supply for many products but the majority of the UK’s timber does not come from this region. Steel however continues to rise in cost at pace as a result of the steel mills been hugely impacted as a result of the war.

For specifiers looking to adopt a SIPS approach – what are the key strengths and benefits of the panels – both from a commercial perspective and for self-build housing options?

The specification of correctly accredited SIPs systems provides the specifier with an extremely predictable system removing variables from the project. Engaging with a company like SBUK group at the earliest stage allows for a predictability in thermal performance, cost and program time from the outset.

The increasingly stringent building regulation changes can still be achieved with an “of the shelf approach” guaranteeing

thermal performance targets, while the offsite manufacture of systems allow for fast and predictable program times on site, reducing variables and therefore risk for the project overall.

What key projects have you been working on over the last 18 months? Is there one in particular where you have really made a difference?

We have recently featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs – The Derbyshire Longhouse.

This was an extremely challenging project that required the meticulous design, manufacture and install of our SIPs to a complex Steel Frame. The Roof panels particularly as all angles were different on each roof plane, providing no square side as a starting point. This was a deliberate feature to create more interesting detailing and architectural flare.

This was achieved and excelled through our highly skilled and collaborative approach as without an exceptional understanding of SIPs and building systems this project would not have worked!

How do you see the timber sector developing over the next 18 months and what plans has SIPbuildUK for 2023 – it seems to be a busy time as the wider Group now offers a range of construction options?

Reducing energy consumption in new builds while using sustainable and responsibly sourced systems / materials remains a main focus in the industry. This is obviously amplified by the situation in the Ukraine and soaring energy prices.

With further demand from clients and specifiers to improve the as built performance of dwellings coinciding with more stringent measures being implemented through SAP we see quality businesses that have the correct accreditations, systems and knowledge in place for these timber systems leading the market.

The offsite, fabric first approach of SIPs and Pre Insulated Timber Frame systems reduce variables, risk, materials, wet trades, program time and labour requirements on site while exceeding current regulations with ease.

With traditional methods of construction finding it increasingly difficult to achieve these standards while keeping wall thicknesses and skilled labour under control, the use of timber systems will continue to boom.

The number of national house builders now adopting these systems on mass and pledging to increase the use of these systems in the future is proof of this.

Improving the fire safety of buildings with copper pipes

Ever since the Grenfell tragedy and the subsequent inquiry into the fire, the topic of building fire safety has been high on the agenda. With the revelation that many homes, shops and offices are filled with flammable materials, people are becoming increasingly concerned and the government is now racing to remove combustible cladding from buildings across the UK.

But whilst a big focus has been placed on cladding since Grenfell, it’s also important to consider the fire resistance of other materials, such as pipes.

The importance of

fire-resistant materials

Fire resistant materials play a key role in reducing fire risks and yet, many buildings in the UK are equipped with materials that offer little to no protection against fires.

A fire-resistant material is one that doesn’t burn easily. While no material is entirely fireresistant, each material burns at a particular temperature and has therefore a certain degree of fire resistance.

In practice, fire-resistant materials are those able to withstand the temperature of the average building fire, which is around 1,100°C. The likes of concrete, steel, glass and copper can all be considered fire-resistant, because their ignition point exceeds this temperature. Most plastics, on the other hand, have an ignition temperature of just 350°C–500°C.

The risks of plastic piping

Plastic is often used for the pipes that supply water, heating and sprinkler systems in buildings. Plastic pipes have become a popular choice, particularly among plumbers and homeowners looking to conserve costs, with around 60% of water supply systems in newbuild homes in the UK made of plastic.

However, a mounting body of evidence is now shedding light on the fire risks associated with plastics, which have been found to spread fires and release dangerous toxins when exposed to high temperatures.

Most plastics are flammable and will burn when exposed to an open flame, releasing gases and smoke. Plastics made up primarily by carbon and hydrogen – which includes most plastics used in construction – burn very well.

The fire resistance of a particular plastic varies based on its composition and the type of flame that it’s subjected to. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used widely for pipes, is less flammable than

most other plastics but will still ignite in the event of a fire.

Other plastics like polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) will melt at temperatures of 130°C –160°C and catch fire at temperatures of 400°C or less. Due to the relatively low melting points of these materials, virtually all plastics must be specially treated with flame retardants before use.

Plastic pipe fumes

Plastic pipes have been found to release dangerous chemicals when exposed to high temperatures. These chemicals include chlorine dioxide, methyl chloride, and hydrogen chloride.

The harmful toxins released into the air by burning plastic have been linked to a vast number of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as certain cancers and birth defects. Nearly six years on from the Grenfell fire, it was revealed that up to a dozen firefighters involved in tackling the blaze had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

What’s more, a recent study published in

Scientific Reports further elucidates the dangers of burning plastic faced by firefighters. The study, which surveyed over 10,000 serving firefighters in the UK, found that over 4% had received a cancer diagnosis, with the agespecific cancer rate up to 323% higher than that of the general population.

The body of research into the dangers of plastic fumes continues to grow, and the available data is already damning. Plastic building materials carry a real threat of severe health issues and even terminal illness when exposed to the temperature of a typical fire.

Copper credentials

With the mounting evidence of the fire dangers of plastic, natural materials such as copper offers the perfect alternative when it comes to reducing the risk of toxic fires.

As a solid material, copper is not considered flammable and only in powder form does the red metal present a serious risk to fire safety. This means that copper pipes can generally be relied upon to withstand a fire.

Copper’s natural fire resistance comes from its relatively high melting point of around 1,085°C, which exceeds the temperature of most building fires. It’s also considerably higher than the melting point of other building materials like plastic and aluminium. In addition, copper has a lower thermal expansion coefficient, meaning it retains its shape and structure when exposed to high temperatures. During a fire, copper pipes will expand only marginally, reducing the need for repairs following the fire. Comparing copper to popular plastic building materials like PVC, PE and HDPE, copper

can be trusted to resist ignition and retains its structural integrity in the event of a fire.

It’s time for the construction industry to prioritise the safety of buildings, rather than opting for the cheapest option meeting the minimum standards. Copper provides the toxic-free and noncombustible alternative that we need, making buildings safer now and for future generations.

Semicircular balcony demands resolved by Schöck

All apartments at the Triptych Bankside development, next to the Thames in Southwark, benefit from spacious balconies, with an emphasis on the quality of the finishes. However, their highly unconventional and dramatic semicircular profiling meant Schöck had to demonstrate its design expertise in meeting the structural load-bearing thermal break requirements.

Triptych Bankside is at 185 Park Street, in Southwark. It comprises three elegant building forms within a landscaped park setting and is a close neighbour of the Tate Modern, the Millenium Bridge and the Globe Theatre. The mixed-use development provides two residential blocks – fifteen and nineteen storeys respectively – along with office accomodation and creative workspace in a ten storey building. There are also retail and cultural amenities at ground level. A subtle twisting form, combined with undulating curved terraces wrapping around the exterior, affords the buildings a considered architectual elegance

– but central to the residential buildings design is also its ability to be adaptive and maximise both amenity space and local views. The development has a commitment to the local community too and Triptych Bankside is facilitating the delivery of 57 new, purpose-built almshouses, to be operated by the United St Saviour’s Charity, which has been working in Southwark since 1541. In addition the design reinstates the lost historic street, Emerson Place, which creates new pedestrian connections through the site to the River Thames and which features a continuous flow of green spaces including a central public square.

Special demands need a special solution

The special demands of the Triptych Bankside semicircular balcony profiling required bespoke Isokorb T type SK units to be designed with specific postional load capacities, using built-in steel reinforcement. The T type SK is a complete system structural thermal break for minimising thermal bridges between cantilevered steel constructions on reinforced concrete components. Since it can be prefabricated to a large degree, installation time on the building site is reduced. Also, due to its superb loadbearing capacity, the engineering and structural design is ideal, even for heavy modern balconies. It is capable of absorbing large bending moments and shear forces; and is certified as a safe and verifiable solution through independent third party evaluations from the BBA and Oxford Brookes University. At present, no other UK product for concrete-to-steel applications meets these load-bearing requirements, or meets the current and future thermal performance required by building standards (Part L).

Minimising thermal bridging is critical

The entire project is built very much with sustainability in mind and minimising any risk of thermal bridging at the balcony detailing is critical for a number of reasons. Namely, local heat loss will result in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building. Also, low internal surface temperatures in the area of any thermal bridge can cause condensation and this in turn is likely to result in structural integrity problems. Mould growth too is a possible risk, which in a residential situation can cause asthma and allergies.

A dependable and fully compliant product range

The Schöck Isokorb range of structural thermal break solutions is the largest in Europe and in the UK helps projects meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations (and the impending Future Homes Standard criteria where relevant). In addition to the Isokorb type used on this project, there are also solutions for concrete-to-concrete, steel-to-steel, renovation projects, Passive House – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. The temperature factor requirement (fRSI) used to indicate condensation risk, which must be equal to, or greater than 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.

Office refit? Go to the wall to minimise energy costs, maximise floor space

With new agile working, more and more offices are being refitted- latest data reveals in Central London alone, more than 70% of office construction is refurbishment(1).

Aluprof Redefines Energy Efficiency with the Launch of a New Window and Door System

FEIN announces new grinding range to elevate industry safety and performance

FEIN, the leading power tools and accessories manufacturer, has announced a new grinding product range, revealing new safety and performance features to meet the latest user needs.

Following the launch, power tool operators working across disciplines will be able to choose from the extended range of over 40 grinding tools, with corded and cordless options available. BP & Centrica plan huge Northern England hydrogen projects

Multiple hydrogen projects, valued into billions of pounds, are being pursued in northern England by large global energy companies such as BP, Centrica, Lhyfe and Equinor.

UKenergy policy revisers have increased Britain’s hydrogen target production aim of 5GW to 10GW. Widening the role of hydrogen in UK decarbonisation efforts signifies that it could potentially be used as a source of heat for commercial and domestic properties across certain regions in England.

Comments Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, “Northern England could be linked by a chain of hydrogen production facilities that produce carbon reducing energy resources. It is therefore feasible that hydrogen will be used as a source of heat for domestic and commercial properties across northern England and North Wales – and this could be kickstarting a potentially greater UK wide hydrogen network”

UK international energy companies BP and Centrica as well as several other large global energy companies are planning on several huge hydrogen projects across northwest and northeast England. Northern England will be connected to various high output hydrogen production facilities increasing the likelihood of widespread consumption in domestic and commercial capacities.

Norwegian state-owned oil and gas company Equinor has submitted a bid for UK governmental funding of £16 million with the aim of constructing a blue hydrogen facility in the Humber region of England. A final investment decision will be made in 2025 on the Hydrogen to Humber (H2H) Production 2 site.

Equinor also plan to install a further blue hydrogen facility close

to their H2H project. The Saltend project will begin operations in 2028 if construction and approval processes are not complicated by unforeseen events.

Both Saltend and Humber projects will use natural gas to produce blue hydrogen and utilise CCUS technology (Carbon Capture & Underground Storage) that will detain a vast majority of created emissions. Equinor also received £8.4 million in government funding, a figure matched by private investments to begin Saltend construction.

BP (British Petroleum) is pursuing an additional blue hydrogen facility in northeast England. H2Teesside will target 1GW of hydrogen production by 2030 with a final investment decision being made in 2027.

BP is further planning a green hydrogen facility located in northeast England - HyGreen Teesside. Production aims to be operational by 2025. Initial capacity will be around 80MW. BP will pursue a future planned expansion of up to 500MW.

Other notable hydrogen projects include Centrica transforming their offshore gas storage facility –Rough, into a hydrogen and natural gas storage installation. Centrica’s Rough facility consists of a partially depleted gas field in the Southern North Sea, 18 miles off the east coast of Yorkshire.

Once modifications are complete

Rough will be the world’s largest hydrogen storage facility and is a further example of hydrogen’s potential prominence in northern

England’s future energy mix. Investment by Centrica to convert their storage facility is thought to be around £2 billion.

A final hydrogen project located in, or around north England is a collaboration between French hydrogen company Lhyfe and Centrica. Both companies will work together to produce offshore wind generated green hydrogen. The initial pilot project will be located in the southern section of the North Sea.

Northeast and northwest England will soon have multiple hydrogen clusters and large hydrogen production projects becoming operational, including HyNet Northwest, a £750 million blue hydrogen joint venture project that includes big companies such as Cadent, Essar Oil UK and Eni UK.

The north of England will be linked by a chain of hydrogen production facilities that produce carbon reducing energy resources. It is therefore feasible that hydrogen will be used as a source of heat for domestic and commercial properties across northern England and North Wales.

First despatch at Desford: Europe’s biggest brick factory begins rollout

The first bricks have now been despatched from the biggest and most efficient manufacturing plant in Europe, Forterra’s new Desford factory in Leicestershire.

The leading building products manufacturer has invested £95 million into future-proofing its Desford factory to achieve outstanding overall equipment effectiveness while upgrading production capacity to a massive 185 million bricks per year, ensuring it becomes the largest, most efficient brick factory across the UK and Europe. Situated just two miles from the M1 and with excellent transport links, the new Desford site will offer a range of red and buff bricks designed to meet the demands of UK housebuilders.

For Desford’s first despatch, 23,740 Cheshire Red Multibricks were packed onto trucks from Forterra’s Euro 6 fleet, which uses the ultra-fuel-efficient i-save engine to reduce emissions while delivering top transport efficiency.

The first two batches of bricks were delivered to Taylor Wimpey, one of the UKs largest housebuilders. Once the Desford factory opens to full operating capacity, it will despatch over 1,000 packs of bricks per day and produce enough bricks to build 24,000 new homes per year, competently meeting the demands of the housing sector.

Incorporating state-of-the-art innovations with sustainability mechanisms, robotics hardware and advanced packaging solutions, the factory upgrade is set to emit approximately 25% less carbon dioxide per brick than the old factory, a reduction in emissions that is well in line with the industry drive towards sustainable production.

The BBC Reported recently that the latest dumping ground for our unwanted clothing is the rapidly growing Fast Fashion graveyard in Chile’s Atacama desert.1 Traders in Chile import unwanted clothes of all types mainly from Europe and the US, to resell both locally and to other Latin American nations. But more than half of the 60,000 tonnes of clothes imported into Chile each year ends up in illegal desert landfills, with dire consequences for the environment and the local communities.

Sadly, it’s typical of an all too familiar story in our throw-away culture of how the demand for Fast Fashion is contributing to long-term waste and seriously impacting the environment. While it’s a relatively new buzzword, Fast Fashion is certainly at the heart of the sustainability debate in the clothing industry. As far as protective wear is concerned and, especially given its short lifecycle, cheap protective wear is effectively becoming its own kind of Fast Workwear.

Fast Fashion is cheap clothing produced to satisfy a short-term mass-market demand. That’s precisely what Fast Workwear - cheap protective wear - does. It fulfils a demand for low-cost working clothes and PPE,

So just how big is the throw-away clothing problem in the UK? It’s said that each Briton owns an average of 115 garments and that the UK is the fourth largest textile-waster in Europe.
